Venice, Italy: Fun facts

"Venice never quite seems real,
but rather an ornate film set
suspended on the water."
 -Frida Giannini-

Although we spent only one day in Venice, I divided the photos in two parts. Here you could read my own impressions and now you can discover some fun facts that I gathered up together, as well as another bunch of photos from this beautiful Italian city. As I told you in my first "fun facts" post from Andorra (here), this type of posts is something that I quite like and that I want to become a little tradition whenever I visit a new place. Hope you like it!

1. There are 118 islands, 416 bridges, 177 canals, 400 gondoliers, 450 palaces, 60 000 inhabitants and 50 000 visitors each day.
2. The first woman in the world that graduated was born in Venice in 1646.
3. It is not allowed to ride a bicycle and feed pigeons.
4. By the late 13th century, Venice was the most prosperous city in Europe.
5. The narrowest street in Venice is called Calleta and it's only 53 cm wide.
6. Acqua alta is the Venetian term for high water, which occurs during November and December when the tide rises up to 2 m and floods low areas such as Piazza San Marco.
7. Venice got its first female gondolier in 2010.
8. Words with Venetian etymology: ciao, ghetto, arsenal, gondola, lagoon, lido, Montenegro, regatta, quarantine...
9. Venice is one of the most expensive cities in Italy.
10. Venice is sinking at the rate of 2 millimeters a year.
